I have been spending maybe too much time with watches for two main reasons-
First – I love watches – the more digital the world becomes, the more attracted I become to the timeless things.
Second – they are real assets – and with the hyper-inflation coming, I would rather keep my money in assets – rather than cash.
I have talked about Rolex and starting with Rolex, I have been expanding my search into what could be good investment watches. I don’t flip but I want to keep them for a while and let the value compound / defend against inflation. Then I might sell to someone who is looking for that piece later on.
One of non-Rolex watches that I thought about was CARTIER SANTOS.
It has all the right elements- it has exquisite history, it has “in-house” movement, it has the top-tier brand. Also, the design has not changed over time – staying relatively the same through history.
I saw some youtube videos that are comparing to Rolex Explorer- its versatility, simplicity- which I agreed.
With that in mind, I visited a local AD – I wanted ti take a look at the watch in person before making the purchase.
It looked great – it was better than the pictures or videos. They really do not do justice in terms of how amazing of a watch it is.
Therefore, I proceeded to see if I can order it – AND WHAT SHOULD BE A GOOD NEWS TO SOMEONE WHO WOULD BE NEVER SELLING IT SOUNDED PRETTY BAD.
“YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET THE WATCH IN 4-6 WEEKS”
That reads – there is no shortage at all with the watch DESPITE ALL THE HYPE AND POSITIVE REVIEWS WITH THE WATCH.
If there was a three month wait, I would have pulled the trigger – however, I am not buying a watch that is readily available if I don’t plan on using it as a beater watch.
For me, a $7,000 watch is not a beater watch. A beater watch would be in under $5K AT MAXIMUM.
Low demand now probably means low demand over the next 1-2 years when I could probably pick up in the secondary market at discount.
Therefore, Cartier Santos is NOT a good investment watch.
IT IS AN AMAZING WATCH THOUGH – ONE DAY I WOULD LOVE TO OWN IT WITHOUT WORRYING ABOUT COST.
